Wagging Tails & Changed Lives: 10 Years of Bravehound

In a room designed for speeches and ceremony, it was the small, human moments that defined BRAVEHOUND”s 10th anniversary at Edinburgh City Chambers.

A veteran smiling down at their dog. A tail thumping happily against the floor. A Labrador loudly lapping up water – cutting through the formality and reminding everyone what this evening was really about.

The evening was filled with wagging tails, warm laughter and a palpable sense of gratitude — from veterans whose lives have been transformed, and from the people and dogs who stand beside them.

A City, a Community, and a Cause

In his address, the Lord Provost reflected on Edinburgh’s long-standing connection to the Armed Forces, describing it as a proud garrison city with deep-rooted ties to veterans and military organisations.

Within that context, he highlighted the importance of charities like BRAVEHOUND — organisations built on resilience, determination and a shared mission to improve veterans’ wellbeing.

But while the setting and speeches acknowledged history and civic pride, the real focus of the evening was something far more personal: the extraordinary bond between veterans and their assistance dogs.

More Than Companions

BRAVEHOUND’s Chair of Trustees, Fiona Andrew, spoke candidly about what it takes to build those partnerships.

It’s not a simple, straightforward match. There’s an alchemy to it.

And yet, when it works, it really works.

Today, BRAVEHOUND supports several accredited partnerships — each one a veteran and their dog, recognised to the highest international standards. But as Fiona emphasised, the impact stretches far beyond those numbers.

These dogs don’t just support one person, they support families, friendships, entire communities.

The ripple effect is undeniable.

That impact was brought into sharp, moving focus by the veterans themselves.

Al McKay described life before being paired with his dog, Mr Chips, in stark terms — housebound, overwhelmed by PTSD, and struggling to cope with even the simplest routines.

Now?

There are early mornings, enthusiastic tail-wags, and a reason to get up — even if that reason arrives at 5am, thumping happily into the side of the bed.

“From someone who was… not living,” he said, “to now… living”.

It’s a simple distinction, but a profound one.

Finding Purpose Again

For Ali, a former RAF veteran, the journey was equally transformative.

After leaving service due to injury and enduring years of tribunals, she described feeling lost, ashamed and without purpose. Anxiety made even stepping outside feel impossible.

Then came BRAVEHOUND — and eventually, Clyde.

Through training together, she didn’t just gain an assistance dog; she found a community. From gardening projects to hill walking and even taking part in a medal-winning show garden, her world began to expand again.

“I found something stable,” she said. “A real community.”

And, perhaps just as importantly, a sense of belonging.

A Decade of Brave Decisions

Over the past ten years, BRAVEHOUND has made more than a few ‘brave’ decisions — from pursuing rigorous international accreditation to building an evidence base for the impact of its work in the emerging field of social prescribing.

There have been challenges too, including losing their training centre and having to rebuild. But through perseverance and sheer determination, the charity has continued to grow, ensuring veterans and their dogs are supported every step of the way.

The Dogs Who Make It All Possible

Of course, at the heart of everything are the dogs.

They bring comfort. Companionship. Independence. Routine. Joy.

They get veterans out of the house, back into their communities, and sometimes — quite literally — back into life.

They also, occasionally, drink very loudly during speeches.

But that’s part of their charm.

Looking Ahead

As the evening drew to a close, there was a sense not just of celebration, but of momentum.

A decade in, BRAVEHOUND is not slowing down. With plans to grow its community of supporters and continue expanding its reach, the next ten years promise even more life-changing partnerships.

Because if one thing was clear from the evening, it’s this:

For the veterans supported by BRAVEHOUND, these dogs are not just companions.

They are everything.
