Connecting Veterans with Vital Support: Introducing Project Shield
As part of our commitment to supporting Scotland’s Armed Forces community, we are proud to highlight Project Shield, an innovative initiative funded by The Veterans Foundation, delivered in partnership with Substances Support Scotland (SSS), and Vector24.
Leon Fischer, Vector 24
This dedicated programme exemplifies our shared vision: to create pathways that enable Service Leavers and their families to live well, thrive, and access the support they need within their communities.
Project Shield focuses on triaging members of the armed forces community and their families who require mental health support, particularly those with alcohol or substance use overlays. The programme is designed to ensure individuals are promptly assessed and offered tailored support within five working days. Fully qualified counsellors then provide bespoke mental health programmes, supporting recovery and well-being.
Recognising the importance of accessible support, Vector24 also provides transportation where needed, ensuring individuals can access assistance in a safe and timely manner. This holistic approach aims to break down barriers and facilitate seamless access to vital services, fostering resilience and confidence in those who have served.
Since its inception, Project Shield has been incredibly busy and highly impactful. The response from the community has been outstanding, with tremendous results and invaluable feedback that underscore the programme’s effectiveness. We are witnessing real, positive change, transforming lives and demonstrating the vital need for such tailored support. This success fuels our determination to expand and improve the project even further.

This initiative also highlights the power of collaboration, bringing together specialist services and experienced professionals to deliver meaningful, person-centred support. At the heart of our vision is a community where veterans and their families are empowered, valued, and connected, building pathways to a future of wellbeing and opportunity.
