Help for Heroes Services
Provided by: Help for Heroes
Help for Heroes supports those who’ve served in the UK Armed Forces or have worked under UK command and their families, no matter when or where they served.
Working across the UK in people’s homes, communities and online, the Charity offers support tailored to a person’s needs.
This includes:
Mental Health Support
The Charity’s Hidden Wounds Service offers confidential, evidence-based talking therapies. The service provides treatment for issues like anxiety, anger, PTSD, low mood and OCD and counselling for life events including bereavement and transition difficulties.
Grants
The Charity can provide one-off grants to support clinical and daily living needs as well as short-term cosy of living challenges. This could include mobility equipment, food and energy top up vouchers, local food bank vouchers and essential brown and white goods.
Clinical Support
Our community-based nurses and occupational therapists support veterans as they navigate and understand their healthcare pathways, including their families and support network when appropriate. The clinical team are resourceful in finding ways, using a ‘Coaching for Health’ approach, to enable and empower veterans to set their healthcare goals, with ‘what matters to them’, and access treatment they may need to support their physical health.
Community Development
In towns and cities across the UK, our Community Builders help bring people from the armed forces community together. We create friendly spaces where they can meet new people, share skills, enjoy activities they care about, and feel part of local life.
By working with families, friends, and neighbours, we make sure there are welcoming opportunities for everyone to get involved. This could be through local hubs, cafés, social groups, or larger nation-wide programmes in sport, volunteering, or the arts.
At its heart, it’s about helping people feel they belong, make friends, and strengthen connections—so that together, they can make a positive difference in their community.
Recovery College
The Charity’s Recovery College offers free, online educational courses and self-help guides with tools, tips and strategies to help people manage their well-being, to move forward with the life they want to lead. Our courses are evidence -based and co-produced and co-facilitated by our recovery staff. That includes veterans and family members with lived experience of the subject matter.
Case Management
If someone has complex or several needs, they will be assigned a case manager.
These are experts in veterans’ welfare issues, who will assess, oversee, coordinate and monitor all the strands of someone’s support. Their aim is to inspire and help veterans and their families to live sustainably within their own communities. They also enable access to welfare support, covering issues such as housing, debt, employment, applying for benefits or the War Pension/AFCS.
Very Seriously Injured (VSI) Service
The Very Seriously Injured (VSI) Service adopts a holistic and enduring approach to supporting veterans who have sustained life-limiting physical and/or mental health conditions as a result of their service. The service offers clinical oversight through the provision of professional support from registered nurses, occupational therapists, or an integrated combination of both, ensuring that the complex needs of these veterans are met through complex case management.

Accessibility & Reach of Services
Help for Heroes works directly in local communities not from fixed physical centres.
Community-first model: Services are shaped to be accessible, as they are delivered in people’s homes and communities. Sports, social activities, and support are offered via local venues, virtual platforms, and through partnerships, reducing travel or accessibility barriers.
- Drop-in access at Help for Heroes cafés means there’s no gatekeeping — people can arrive, connect, and learn about support options immediately
- Support via multiple channels: Whether it’s in-person (cafés, local clubs), one-to-one (clinical, welfare, case management), or online (Hidden Wounds, Recovery College), Help for Heroes ensures that service format options suit different needs and abilities.
- One-to-one services such as Hidden Wounds (mental health), Clinical (physical health), Very Seriously Injured service, Welfare Support, and Grants, are all accessible across the UK—typically via contacting the charity and being triaged into the right form of support.
