Navigating Festival Season with Anxiety or PTSD
Practical tips to help you enjoy live events in a way that works for you
Summer brings plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy yourself, from music festivals and concerts to food festivals, agricultural shows, Highland Games, the Edinburgh Fringe and local community events.
If busy environments can sometimes feel challenging, a little planning can help you feel more comfortable and enjoy the experience.
Before You Book
Every event is different.
Take a few minutes to look at the venue, expected crowd sizes and accessibility information. Many organisers publish site maps, quiet spaces, accessible viewing areas and FAQs to help you decide if an event is right for you.
If you’re booking a performance, it’s also worth checking for content warnings. Some productions advertise themes or effects such as loud noises, strobe lighting, explosions, violence or audience participation, helping you make an informed choice before you arrive.
Plan Your Visit
Knowing what to expect can make the day feel less stressful.
Think about:
- How you’ll get there and home.
- Where you’ll meet friends if you get separated.
- Where toilets, exits and quieter areas are located.
- Taking anything that helps you stay comfortable, such as water, medication, sunglasses, ear defenders or headphones.
While You’re There
There’s no prize for staying the longest.
Take breaks when you need them, grab something to eat, find a quieter spot if the crowds become too much and remember that it’s okay to change your plans if you’re no longer enjoying yourself.
Enjoy the Experience
Whether it’s one comedy show, a headline band, a local gala or simply wandering around with a coffee, every event counts.
The best day out isn’t the busiest one—it’s the one you come home from feeling glad you went.
